Bueno Blue Badger is a 2000 AQHA/FQHA 96% Foundation bred Smokey Grullo Stallion and is homozygous for the black gene so he will never throw a red based foal. He also carries a creme gene and, of course, dun factor. He is a Smokey black dun (Grullo), which he consistently throws to his beautiful, correct foals along with great dispositions, and trainable, willing minds. Color is the icing on the cake.

A grullo (prounounced "grew-yo") colored horse is a black horse with dun factor. Dun dilutes coat color. Bueno Blue Badger (Blue) is a Smokey Grullo so he has a cream gene making his coat color diluted even further. He is homozygous for black (EE) so he cannot throw a red-based foal making his offspring mostly blacks and grullos (a bay is possible only if the mare has black points but the cross could also produce a buckskin or buckskin/dun since he carries the cream gene too, Bay would be least likely). According to the color calculator when breeding a bay mare to "Blue" there is less than a 19% chance of getting a bay and when breeding to a sorrel/chestnut mare (that may carry hidden Agouti which is black points). If your sorrel/chestnut mare has no hidden Agouti then there is no possibility of Bay, Zebra Dun, Buckskin or Dunskin.

12.50% - Zebra Dun
12.50% - Smoky Grullo
12.50% - Smoky Black
12.50% - Grullo
12.50% - Dunskin
12.50% - Buckskin
12.50% - Black
12.50% - Bay

Blue is a Smokey Grullo with no white markings and loads of Dun factor and he is UC Davis tested to be homozygous black. He also carries a creme gene which is what makes him a Smokey Grullo and not just a Grullo. He will produce Grullo, Smokey Grullo, Dunskin, Zebra Dun, Smokey Black, Black, Bay, Buckskin as well as double dilutes when bred to a mare with at least one creme gene for a Smokey Creme foal (a double diluted black horse). He has been producing a high percentage of dun factor in his foals.

Blue has the kindest heart. He is a true gentleman in every way. He has only been used for breeding, due to an injury as a youngster but he is just about 100% sound now and is a nice fluid mover with tons of athletic ability.

He will be standing at stud here at The Lewis Ranch Stallion Station for the 2009 breeding season for a stud fee of only $600 with a $50 booking fee that goes toward that stud fee via live cover, on farm insemination or cooled or frozen shipped semen. Shipping Cooled semen is still only $175 this year.

Live Color Foal Guarantee - Will not sire a red or non-dilute foal! Guaranteed buckskin or Dunskin out of black, bay or sorrel mares!

RFF Starbuck is a registered AQHA and APHA Breeding Stock Perlino Stallion. Starbuck was shown in Breeding Stock Classes in APHA and earned a Superior in Halter and his APHA Breeding Stock Championship as a 4 year old. In 1999 Starbuck was the #1 Honor Roll in Breeding Stock halter.

Starbuck is the first perlino officially recognized by APHA. He is also the first Breeding Stock stallion to ever earn an APHA Championship, and the first one to earn a Superior in any event. Starbuck's combination of superb conformation, show stopping presence, and absolutely spectactular pearlescent cream and gold color can take your breath away! The judges must agree: 51 out of 56 placed him first in Halter, and Starbuck was UNDEFEATED in performance classes, earning Circuit Championships in Working Hunter, Hunter Hack, Hunter Under Saddle, and Western Pleasure.

As a very rare form of perlino, he can be thought of as a homozygous buckskin. He has tested Red Factor EE at UC Davis (he can not sire red based foals, i.e. palomino), and he is also homozygous for the bay color (agouti gene) so he can not sire a smokey black. Starbuck's sire is a registered dun, and since Starbuck has a gold dorsal stripe, Starbuck also carries the dun gene. On sorrel, bay and black mares you can only get a variation of buckskin or dunskin foal.

Starbuck offers an opportunity to guarantee the popular buckskin color out of your mare, in addition to excellent bloodlines, beautiful conformation and temperament. When breeding to Starbuck, your foal's exact shade of buckskin will also depend on the color of your mare. Chestnut and light, clear coated bay mares would be ideal to produce a light buckskin foal with good contrast between body color and black points. A dark bay/brown or black mare could also produce a much darker buckskin. Regardless the shade it will genetically be a buckskin. Since Starbuck has a dorsal stripe, some foals will also have a dorsal stripe (dunskin).

The only exceptions to a buckskin foal would be if your mare is grey, or carries a dilute gene. If you have a dilute mare, you have a 50% chance of a perlino, and if your mare is grey there is a 50% chance your foal will be born buckskin and turn grey.

Starbuck is nominated to the AQHA Incentive Fund, APHA Breeders Trust and to several futurities. When you breed your registered AQHA or TB mare to RFF Starbuck, your foal will be eligible for the following registries: AQHA, APHA, ABRA, IBHA, PtHA.

Starbuck was inspected and approved by the American Warmblood Registry and registered with the Sport Horses With Color Registry as well. His incredible athleticism makes him a perfect cross on TB or warmblood mares for dressage, hunter, jumper or sport horse prospects.

With Starbuck's unique color genetics he is also an excellent cross on Arabian mares to produce the popular ½ Arabian buckskin foals. His correct conformation and athletic ability will produce foals which will excel in halter as well as performance classes.

The unique blend of AQHA foundation breeding combined with some of today's more popular bloodlines in Starbuck's pedigree make him an excellent cross on modern show bloodlines to produce halter horses who can also ride. Starbuck's pedigree includes 10 AQHA Champions or AQHA Champion producers in the first 4 generations of his pedigree.

Questions about your foals possible color? Consult the color calculator at the Animal Genetics website. Under sire enter stallion color as Perlino Dun, Homozygous Black (EE) Homozygous Agouti, and Heterozygous Dun. Enter what you know about your mare, and it will tell you the probability of each possible outcome!

This site is not intended to give the visitor a complete education in the science of equine genetics, but merely to explain the cream gene in layman's terms, and thus help dispel some of the myths associated with it. If you have questions about these horses and their coloration, please visit the Cream Gene Facts page, or our Color Discussion Board.

The American Quarter Horse Association had a rule on its books, 227i (formerly known as 227j), that disallowed registration of purebred Quarter Horses with two cream genes. The organization that has gotten the AQHA Rule 227i eliminated has an email list you may join:
